ASUS U36SD-XH71 (13.3-Inch Screen) Laptop Reviews
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful Great laptop for the price, December 29, 2011 This review is from: ASUS U36SD-XH71 (13.3-Inch Screen) Laptop (Personal Computers) I just recently bought this laptop for my dad, and I'm glad to say we're both pleased with the purchase. I've had some time over the holiday to mess with the asus so what follows will be what, IMHO are the pros and cons of this series.
Pros:
Light but sturdy (very little flex)
Very fast boot and shutdown times (consistently below 20 sec and 8 seconds respectively)
Fast performance overall
Excellent heat management
GT 520M is a nice addition though still an entry level gpu
Excellent battery life
Great keyboard and touchpad
Cons:
Terrible speakers, but honestly I haven't come across a 13 incher with "good" speakers
Screen quality leaves a lot to be desired (does not lack in brightness, but contrast is poor and colors are a bit washed out)
This laptop is great for the price. The core i7 processor and SSD do not disappoint. I'm not a believer in Windows experience index but I think it will help those who are... Read more
Good Portable Workhorse, April 8, 2012 This review is from: ASUS U36SD-XH71 (13.3-Inch Screen) Laptop (Personal Computers) I got one of these because I got tired of lugging 20 lbs worth of Alienware m17x back and forth (when hoofing it, this required a serious backpack with an internal frame to protect my back). That m17x had a serious Quad Core i7 processor, 256 SSD and 16 GB RAM on it and I had doubts that this U36S ultraportable was going to be able to sustain my workload. While not as fast as the m17x, especially when compiling large programs, which would fully utilize all 8 CPU threads on the m17x, the U36s performs decently. I have had occasion to run 4 RDBMSs simultaneously (Oracle, PostGRES, MySQL and Informix) along with a heavy weight servlet based application running on a Java App Server (in a development environment, not production, obviously)..
Not bad for such a small light machine.
I had a very positive experience with ASUS technical support when the machine refused to power on after 3 months of heavy daily use (it's my main development machine). I was not treated like a... Read more
Best laptop I ever owned.., January 5, 2012 By George Irakis (Sic Valley, NY USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: ASUS U36SD-XH71 (13.3-Inch Screen) Laptop (Personal Computers) I know the title seems pretty biased but, its well deserved. Obviously the latest and greatest always seems to improve on what you owned before. However, with this laptop I honestly don't see myself buying another one for many years to come. SSD and Core i7 provide an excellent combination of speed and power. Boot time is literally almost instantaneous. Aesthetically a beautifully built laptop which doesn't attract as much fingerprints as other machines. Perfectly balanced keyboard and nice vibrant screen. Although I agree with other reviewers, speakers are really lame. Also, Asus is not giving you much SSD hard drive space. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding laptop that provides some serious speed/power that rivals most desktops in a 3.7lbs machine. Definitely recommended if you can find it for under $1,200.
